What Is Chiropractic Care, Really? A Straight-Talk Guide for Edwardsville Residents

What Is Chiropractic Care Really A Straight-Talk Guide for Edwardsville Residents (1)

If you’ve never been to a chiropractor before, you probably have questions — and maybe a few misconceptions picked up from movies, word of mouth, or that one person who said it “didn’t work” for them. Fair enough. Chiropractic care has been misunderstood for decades, and it doesn’t help that some in the field have oversold what it can do.

So let’s talk about what chiropractic care actually is, what it’s genuinely good at, and what you can realistically expect if you walk through our doors at Infinite Wellness in Glen Carbon.

The Short Version

Chiropractic care is a form of hands-on healthcare focused on the relationship between your spine, your joints, and your nervous system. When something in that system is out of alignment — a vertebra sitting wrong, a joint that’s not moving correctly, a nerve getting compressed — it can create pain, stiffness, and a whole chain of compensatory problems throughout the body.

A chiropractic adjustment is a specific, controlled force applied to restore proper alignment and movement. That’s it. The pop you might hear is just gas releasing from the joint — like cracking your knuckles, nothing dramatic.

What makes chiropractic genuinely effective for a lot of people is that it addresses the mechanical cause of pain, not just the pain signal itself. That’s a meaningful difference.

What Chiropractic Is Good At

Infinite Wellness Center

Let’s be direct. Chiropractic care is most effective for:

Back pain — especially lower back pain. This is probably the most well-researched application of chiropractic, and the evidence is solid. The American College of Physicians recommends spinal manipulation as a first-line treatment before medication for both acute and chronic low back pain.

Neck pain and stiffness — whether from poor posture, tech use, whiplash, or a rough night’s sleep. Headaches — specifically tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches (the kind that start at the base of your skull and radiate forward). Many patients are surprised to find their headaches decrease significantly after cervical spine care.

Sciatica — nerve pain that runs from the lower back down through the leg. Adjustments that reduce disc pressure and restore joint mobility can make a significant difference.

Joint pain in the shoulders, knees, and hips — especially when combined with soft tissue therapy and targeted exercises.

Sports injuries and repetitive strain — from weekend warriors to competitive athletes, chiropractic is a core part of how many people recover and prevent re-injury.

Pregnancy-related back and pelvic pain — our chiropractors are trained in pregnancy-safe techniques and this is something we see often.

What Chiropractic Isn't

Infinite Wellness Center

Being honest matters here. Chiropractic is not a cure for systemic disease. It won’t treat infections, cancer, or conditions that require medication or surgery. Some chiropractors have historically made claims in these areas that weren’t supported by evidence — and that’s done real damage to the profession’s credibility.

At Infinite Wellness, we stay in our lane. We’re great at what we’re great at. And when something falls outside our scope, we say so and help you figure out where to go.

What a Visit at Infinite Wellness Actually Looks Like

Infinite Wellness Center

First visit, you’re with us for about 45–60 minutes. We start by talking — about your history, your symptoms, your lifestyle, what you’ve tried before. Then we do a physical exam: we check your posture, range of motion, reflexes, and run some orthopedic tests to pinpoint what’s happening.

After that, we explain what we found and what we think will help. We give you a realistic picture of how long recovery typically takes for your type of issue. We don’t pressure you, and we don’t lock you into anything before you’ve decided you want to move forward.

If we agree to start care, most patients begin their first adjustment that same day.

Follow-up visits are shorter — usually 20 to 30 minutes. We check in on how you’re feeling, adjust our approach as needed, and add exercises or lifestyle guidance as your care progresses.

How Long Does It Take to Feel Better?

For acute injuries (something that happened recently), many patients feel noticeable improvement after just a few visits. Full resolution of an acute issue typically takes 4–8 weeks. For chronic problems that have been building for months or years, it takes longer — but meaningful improvement is still very much on the table with consistent care.

The honest answer is that everyone’s different, and we won’t pretend otherwise. What we will do is give you a real estimate at your first visit and update it as we go.
